Portfolio FAQ

Q: Do I need to submit a portfolio?
A: Yes, a portfolio is required for all our graduate programs.

Q: What is the format?
A: Up to 16 pages of content in either a single or two-page spread. You can add a title page and table of contents – these will not count toward the 16 pages. The recommended format is between A4 – A2 in size (8.5” x 11” – 16.5” x 23”) and the file cannot be bigger that 10Mb.

Q: How do I submit the portfolio?
A: Online via SlideRoom. http://asoaau.slideroom.com as a single PDF file (maximum 10MB). There is a minimal fee for the upload, paid in US$ and this fee is non-refundable. Physical portfolios will not be accepted. You must upload the Slideroom receipt to your application account.

Q: What do I put in the portfolio?
A: Recent, high-quality work. The portfolio will be judged on both content and overall design.  When you’re laying it out, you should consider scale and clarity of the image and text.  Keep in mind that we look for your ability to think abstractly and conceptually, to ask questions and be reflective, as well as your ability to communicate visually with thoughtful and crafted drawings and models.

Q: I have no background in architecture. What should I show?
A: Work that shows evidence of creativity and making things. It could be artwork, construction, photography etc. It should also demonstrate abstract thinking and visual communication skills as well as your interest in architecture.

Q: What else?
A: Our discipline is spatial. Whether through drawing, model making, painting, photography, or other media, it is very important that you communicate your ability to understand and craft space.  As well, you need to clearly identify if any material in the portfolio is not entirely your own work.
